And You, too Grandma?

I just listened to the news this morning and again....they are talking about the mother who put her children out of the car three miles from their home.

As I understand the facts...the girls were fighting and she told them to get out...she drove around the block and when she returned the girls were no where in sight. She drove home and the older girl was home...the younger girl had been found by a woman, bought ice cream and then the police were called. The younger girl was taken to the police department.

Mom calls police to report her young girl missing. Dad and Mom go to pick daughter up and Mom is arrested. Here...is the part of the story I didn't know...Grandmother was in car!!!

I was not judging this Mom...although, let me be clear...I do feel what she did is wrong...and while I wasn't a perfect mother...I never threw them out of the car for arguing or anything else for that matter.
I might have threatened to kill them, but that's all!
But...when I heard the grand mother was in the car...I was furious!
I don't know why but it just seems heartbreaking to me that Grandma was in the car!
What do you think?

A couple of years ago in our area, a woman left her toddler (3 years old I think) by the side of the road of a major highway. When the cops picked her up 60 miles (yup) later, she said she was "tired of him whining all the time." Some people, huh? BTW, wanted to remind you that today is Uncle Lynn's birthday, and I'm running a one-day POPrs giveaway to celebrate. Please come by!

When I heard this story all I could think was I wished my father and mother heard the story BECAUSE once when I was probably about 14 my father started one of his famous power struggle fights with me in the car about something he was doing I didn't like and he threw me out while driving on route 9 in NJ near Freehold. Now you see, I personally didn't care. Perhaps someone better would take me home. So they did come back and get me and I sadly had to get back into the car and live with those nuts. Back in the day no one would have thought it was punishable to do what they did.

Lauren...I am sorry...I am sure I have done things to wound my children and it makes me sad!
While i never put them out of a car...I am sure I said and done things that hurt them...I have to live with that knowledge and so do your parents!

Wow... that is awful on so many levels. Pisses me off to say the least.

I'm thinking she should have counted to 100, done it again, and then again.

And then she should have parked the car somewhere and taken a walk around the block.

Easy for me to say though.

And if it had been my mother in the car, she would have told me to teach them a lesson by leaving them. Yeah - she's one of those squishy grandmas :-)

It all depends on the ages of these kids, and she only drove around the block. I'm all for teaching the brats a scary lesson, though. I have daughters that fight all. the. time! It's a tough love lesson.

I agree with Rhonda... it depends on their ages and the area. I don't think it's all that terrible, to be honest. Now, if they were 6 and 7 years old and they were in a questionable area of town, that would make it different. It's totally something my parents would have done... and, like Em's mother, probably something my mother would advocate today (again, depending on age and area). She doesn't put up with crap. So I didn't find it odd or upsetting in any way that the grandmother was in the car. Lots of grandmas are mean old ladies, you know ;).

maybe it was grandma's idea!

I haven't heard this story yet, but I agree that it was a wrong move on the part of mom & grandma (I find her equally responsible).

I also find it hard to understand how the mother only drove around the block, yet her one child was able to make it 3 miles home!

My kids know how to push my buttons, especially when I am driving. I find that pulling over and parking the car (w/o yelling) gets them to settle down.

I agree Brenda...I understand possibly one parent losing it...but there was another person who could be thinking in the car!
The grandma...I just can't relate to that grandma at all!

My mom would have gotten out of the car and walked with the kids!

I can´t imagine a power struggle that is so bad, that I would leave the kids on the street! Even though I do understand the reason, I still can´t imagine...

My dad is so oblivious that he would tell you I was a liar but he could spout all the bad stuff I did that he didn't like. I've made peace with it. But still shared the story. You're a good mom.

How old were these kids?
The bus stops at the entrance of the driveway to my ex-husband's country house and my kids(14 and 12) are required to walk a half mile to the house. My daughter(14 at the time) ran cross country and they were required to run 10 miles back into town after being dropped off by the coach. She was the fastest and always ran alone. My kids walk to the local grocery store to buy a coke when they have them in the fridge. I am sorry, I am missing the horror of this. If the kids had wanted to walk home with no anger involved would everyone feel so upset over this? I would probably be a world class athlete if my dad had made me run home instead of giving in to my whining.

As I understand...the ages were 10 and 12. The twelve year old made it home...and the 10 year got icecream and a ride in a police car. I just feel f Mom is culpable...Grandma is more so!
Thanks everyone for your comments!

I judge the mom and the Grandma. IDIOTS!!!! You can't handle your 2 girls fighting? They are sisters....its what kids do. I would NEVER put Zander out of the car and make him fend for himself. I am his mother through good and bad and my job is to take care of him. Did I mention they were IDIOTS!!! Ohhh...that makes me soooo angry. You don't know what creeps are out there ready to do harm to kids.....and that woman basically just handed someone her kids on a silver platter. I bet their fighting didn't seem to bad after her arrest, huh? IDIOTS!

I'm not familiar w/ this story--but I would never kick my kids out of the car--and I have been on some wild rides w/ them!!
